Cloth selection in glazing has direct consequences for the glass quality going out the door. Lint trapped inside an IGU before sealing is a permanent defect. The unit cannot be cleaned after sealing. It has to be remade. On toughened glass, oils from fingerprints not fully removed before the tempering oven get baked into the surface and show as shadow marks in certain light. Silicone sealant adhesion depends on substrate preparation: if the IPA wipe leaves cloth residue on the glass or frame, the silicone bonds to the residue, not the substrate. Low-E and solar control coatings are soft enough that a cloth with any embedded particle from manufacture will scratch them.

Red Rose has manufactured industrial cleaning cloths in the UK since 1958. Every cloth is pre-washed before despatch, removing the loose fibres that create lint risk on glass surfaces. Non-abrasive construction is safe for Low-E and solar control coatings. IPA and acetone compatibility covers the standard substrate preparation wipe-down without the cloth degrading. Batch quality is consistent, which matters in glazing fabrication where a variation between bags introduces an uncontrolled variable into a process that is otherwise tightly managed. Bulk bags in 5kg, 8kg and 10kg suit both workshop storage and installation van stock. For glaziers using specialist disposable lint-free wipes, the cost per wipe is lower.

FAQs

Are these cloths safe to use inside IGU manufacturing processes?

Lint inside a sealed IGU is a permanent defect. There is no way to clean it out after the unit is sealed, and replacement is the only fix. The cloths in this range are pre-washed before despatch specifically to remove loose fibres from the manufacturing process.

For use inside IGU production, the cloth should come from a sealed bag immediately before the wipe rather than from an open bag sitting on a production bench collecting dust. Low-lint performance is the standard that matters for glazing wipes, not absorbency.

Are these cloths compatible with IPA and acetone for substrate preparation?

These cloths hold up to IPA and acetone, which covers the standard substrate preparation wipe-down used before silicone and sealant application in the glazing trade. The recycled linen and cotton construction does not degrade when saturated with IPA and does not leave residue on the glass surface after the solvent evaporates. White spirit and frame cleaner compatibility is the same.

Will these cloths scratch Low-E or solar control glass coatings?

Low-E soft coat and solar control coatings scratch more easily than uncoated float glass. Self-cleaning glass is no different. A cloth carrying grit or hard particles from its own manufacturing process will mark any of these surfaces on contact. The cloths in this range are pre-washed before despatch to remove process debris, and non-abrasive construction means no embedded particles in the weave.

No cloth can guarantee scratch-free performance if the glass surface already has contamination on it when the wipe starts. Wiping contaminated glass without removing the contamination first is where coatings get damaged.

How should these cloths be used for silicone clean-up before it cures?

Fresh silicone needs to be wiped back before it skins, which in a warm workshop or on a sunny site can be a matter of minutes. A cloth that smears wet silicone rather than lifts it spreads the problem and makes the clean-up harder. These cloths absorb and hold wet silicone without smearing because the cloth construction traps material in the fibre rather than pushing it across the surface.

For structural silicone or weatherseal clean-up, work with the cloth in short overlapping strokes rather than long wipes, and change to a fresh section as it loads. Once silicone begins to skin, removal without marking the glass or frame requires a solvent, not just a cloth wipe.

What cloth is right for surface prep before silicone sealant application?

Silicone sealant bonds to whatever is on the substrate surface at the time of application. If a cloth leaves any residue, IPA trace, or fibre on the glass or frame before the silicone goes down, the sealant bonds to that rather than the glass itself. The result is an adhesion failure that may not show up until the installation is months or years old.

The standard practice is two wipes: a cleaning wipe with IPA to remove grease, then a second dry wipe to remove the IPA residue before applying sealant. For that dry wipe, a lint-free cloth for glazing with no residue or fibre transfer is the only cloth that does the job.
